We’re passionate about nurturing creativity, curiosity and care.
At Bittern Preschool, we are committed to fostering a warm, inclusive and child-safe environment where every child feels valued, respected, protected and supported in their unique journey of growth and discovery.
We believe that all children have the right to feel safe at all times and to be empowered as active participants in decisions that affect them. Our philosophy is grounded in the following principles:
1. Child-Centric Approach
We believe that every child has the right to be seen, heard, understood and kept safe. Our staff actively listen to and observe each child to recognise their individual needs, interests, rights and developmental milestones. Through personalised programming, we ensure that each child receives the support, encouragement and protection they need to thrive both individually and within the group setting.
We believe the environment is the third teacher and intentionally curate environments that promote children’s wellbeing, inclusion, agency and safety. Our spaces are designed to encourage exploration, confidence, secure relationships and a strong sense of belonging, while remaining responsive to the needs and capabilities of every child.
We are committed to upholding children’s rights and creating a culture where children feel safe to express themselves, share their ideas, and seek support from trusted adults.
2. Empowerment and Respect
We recognise children as capable thinkers, active participants and emerging global citizens. We empower them to explore their curiosity, express their ideas, develop independence and build the skills they need to navigate the world around them safely and confidently.
Our staff foster respectful, responsive and trusting relationships with children and families, recognising that secure relationships are central to children’s wellbeing and sense of safety. We uphold the principle that each child’s primary caregiver plays a crucial role as their first teacher, and we honour and respect this relationship in all interactions.
We are committed to promoting children’s voices, supporting their agency and teaching protective behaviours that help children develop confidence, resilience and self-advocacy skills.
3. Diversity and Inclusion
We celebrate diversity in all its forms, including First Nations perspectives, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender identities, family structures, cultures, abilities and neurodiversities. We actively create an environment where every child and family feels welcomed, respected, culturally safe and included.
We acknowledge our responsibility to provide equitable opportunities for all children and to challenge bias, discrimination and exclusion. We are committed to ensuring that all children experience a sense of belonging and emotional safety within our preschool community.
4. Child Safety and Wellbeing
The safety, wellbeing and rights of children are at the centre of everything we do. We are committed to maintaining a strong culture of child safety that is embedded in our daily practice, relationships, policies and decision-making.
Our educators actively promote and model safe, respectful and inclusive behaviours, while maintaining high expectations for professional conduct. We support children to understand their rights, develop body autonomy, express their feelings and identify trusted adults who can support them.
We value partnerships with families and the wider community in creating environments where children feel physically, emotionally and culturally safe. We uphold the Victorian Child Safe Standards and continuously reflect on and improve our practices to ensure the ongoing safety and wellbeing of every child.
5. Continuous Learning and Growth
We believe in the importance of lifelong learning, critical reflection and professional growth. Our staff engage in ongoing professional development and reflective practice to strengthen their knowledge, skills and understanding of children’s learning, development, wellbeing and safety.
We value and celebrate the diverse strengths, experiences and perspectives that each staff member brings to our community. Through collaboration, reflection and continuous improvement, we strive to provide the highest quality care and education for all children and families.
By upholding these principles and values, we strive to create a nurturing, inclusive and child-safe environment where every child can flourish, and every staff member can thrive as educators and caregivers. Together, we are committed to building a community that fosters love, respect, safety and lifelong learning for all.
